Investigations in Comoposition
Investigations in Composition is a translation of French modernist painter, Jean Helion’s 1935 work titled, ’Standing Figure’ from a figure into a form. Helion’s painting suggests dimensionality through tonal gradients and object arrangement—giving the work a depth of field using only color fills and no lines. Generative drawings were produced to render a three dimensional reading of the two dimensional painting. Subsequent drawings speculate on the Helion’s forms slipping past one another, disappearing from view, or rotating away from one another—eventually recomposing the painting into a new form.
