Rotated Rooms

Rotate Rooms begins with a study of a typical Chicago worker’s cottage (a small scale residential type) with Walter Netch’s University Hall (a large scale institutional type), both reconstructed strictly through images. In overlaying these two typologies, the project found a middle ground between a brutalist tower and a late 19th century single family residence. Using the cottage house as a base primitive, each room is rotated on axis in three directions to create new forms and hybrid programs that are simultaneously domestic and public. Textures and finishes are intentionally rotated from their assumed positions and re-scaled to be read as a new material. Concrete is manipulated to appear as siding and interior wallpaper appears as an exterior terrazzo.
